History

The Ferrari 308 GTB marked the evolution of the Dino philosophy into what many consider the first truly modern mid-engined Ferrari road car. Unveiled at the 1975 Paris Motor Show, the beautifully proportioned 308 GTB signalled a return to Pininfarina styling after the Bertone-designed 308 GT4. For the first time, the car proudly wore the Ferrari badge rather than the Dino name.

Mechanically, the 308 GTB retained the proven transversely-mounted 3.0-litre V8 of its predecessor but featured a shorter wheelbase, reduced weight and, on early European cars, the highly desirable dry-sump lubrication system. Producing approximately 255 bhp, the all-alloy V8 made the 308 GTB the most powerful road-going version of the model, capable of exceeding 150 mph while delivering the balance and responsiveness that would establish it as one of Ferrari's greatest driver's cars.

Production initially began with lightweight glassfibre (Vetroresina) bodies built by Scaglietti before Ferrari switched to steel-bodied production in April 1977. Although slightly heavier, these early steel-bodied cars retained the Dry Sump engine before later production adopted wet-sump lubrication.

The model evolved over the years with the introduction of the open-top GTS, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and, ultimately, the four-valve Quattrovalvole (QV) engine in 1982. With more than 12,000 examples produced, the 308 became one of Ferrari's greatest commercial successes.

Today, the most sought-after examples are undoubtedly the early Vetroresina cars and the European Dry Sump versions. Their desirability stems not only from their performance and purity but also from their direct connection with Ferrari's competition ambitions. During the late 1970s, Michelotto—then an official Ferrari dealer—began transforming Dry Sump 308 GTBs into competition cars for private teams and Charles Pozzi (Ferrari France). Although Ferrari had not originally designed the 308 GTB exclusively as a racing car, the factory homologated numerous competition components and actively supported Michelotto's programme, making the Dry Sump cars the natural foundation for the legendary rally and circuit cars that followed.

Our Car

Produced in 1977, this Ferrari 308 GTB Dry Sump was delivered new through Auto Becker, the official Ferrari importer and dealer in Germany.

Among Ferrari enthusiasts and collectors, the early Dry Sump cars, together with the Vetroresina examples, are considered the most desirable and collectible versions of the 308 GTB. Not only do they represent the most powerful specification produced for the road, but they also embody the closest link between the road-going 308 and Ferrari's motorsport ambitions, becoming the very cars that inspired and formed the basis for the famous Michelotto competition and rally cars.

Throughout its life, this example benefited from residing in a dry climate, allowing it to remain remarkably well preserved and virtually free from the corrosion issues often associated with cars from this era.

Returning to Germany during the late 2010s, the car underwent an extensive recommissioning programme under previous ownership.

In 2019, the matching-numbers engine was comprehensively rebuilt. During the same period, the body was stripped to bare metal and professionally refinished in its original Rosso Corsa, while the interior was completely retrimmed in brand-new Connolly leather, restoring the car to an exceptionally high standard while remaining faithful to its factory specification.

Since completion of the restoration, the car has covered only maintenance and test miles, remaining carefully preserved and presenting today in outstanding mechanical and cosmetic condition.

Matching numbers throughout and beautifully presented, this European-specification Ferrari 308 GTB Dry Sump represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most significant and collectible analogue Ferraris of the 1970s. Combining rarity, motorsport heritage, originality and extensive restoration, it is a superb example worthy of the finest Ferrari collections.

Storia
